  1. Hi Peter and Lindsey,
    Here are the Questions.

Why Do you think Grant Lied to Ms. Emma about his visit? IS he trying to hide something?

    and

Why did Jefferson reply "a corn for a hog" to MS. Emma? Do you think this is significant?

    ReplyDelete
  2. For question 1 mabye he is trying to hide his identity so know one else could know that he is trying to help her out with the situation on jefferson being in jail. Also thats what I think he is trying to hide.

  3. I would like to make a update on question 1 I really think he did not want her to know that he got nothing out of talking to jefferson or cheered him up in anyway.also he was only with him for about an hour in the jail cell when he quotes "I was with him for about an hour, then I went back of town. then partialy lied when he said I have a girl back of town.I like to see her sometimes" So he is trying to hide the fact that eventhough he did talk to jefferson it was not enough to make an impact on him. pg. 100

  4. For question 2 He feels like he is being treated like a pig when miss emma tries to give him corn and already feels like he is one because of the way they treat him in jail and what he did about murdering the manager at the store. Then later stealing the money out of the cash register. Also he thinks thats all he is a hog. pg.122

  6. For question 1, i agree with what peter said. I think that Grant lied to Ms. Emma about his visit because he didnt want to tell her that he visited jefferson without making any impact on him at all. Ms. Emma wants Grant to be making an impact on Jefferson since he only has a little more time to live and if grant hasnt, then whats the point of even telling her because she is just going to be upset at the outcome of Jeffersons emotions after Grants visit, since the outcome was bad news. Jefferson hasnt learned or gained anything from the meeting with Grant. "Deep in you, you think he know, he done the significance of what its all abou? deep in you?"pg. 100. this quote was said by reverend ambrose to grant. As a result, i dont think Grant was hiding anything.. if anything it was to help Ms. Emma because nothing was accomplished during the meeting.

  7. For question 2, i think Jefferson saying this to Ms. Emma was very important and significant because it shows that Jefferson has thought about what the attorney said on how he is just an animal and that he is truly giving up. "'You aint no hog, you hear me? you aint no hog.' "thats all im is. fattening up to-"pg. 122 this quote was said both by Ms. Emma and jefferson. Ms. Emma is upset that he is talking like this. Jefferson really doesnt care anymore. i think this scene is significant because it seems like the end for Jefferson, and how he really doesnt care anymore.

  8. In this discussion, both lindsey and peter seem to agree that grant lied to avoid telling ms. emma that his visit had no impact on him. Also, Jefferson may be reffering to himself as a hog because he truly doesnt care anymore

  9. Hey guys
    1. Do you think the "the little pine tree" story in chapter 19 (pg. 150) was significant or meaningful at all to Grant? why or why not?

    2. Do you think that its ironic that Jeffersons execution is around easter, which is the holiest time of the catholic religion?

    ReplyDelete
  10. For question 1 I think it made Grant rethink what jefferson was going threw in the jail cell and learned that he needed God in his heart to understand what jefferson was going threw. On pg. 150 Reverend Ambrose said some last remarks and asked God to go with those in locked up in the prison cells. This helped Grant rethink about what was going with jefferson when he heard him speak. So right know it does not look like its having much of an influence on him but he is thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. For question 2 Yes I do think its ironic because Even after having some time to think about what Reverand ambrose had to say to God. Grants heart still was not in the right place with God in his heart and does not have the stregnth with him yet. On pg.158 Reverend Ambrose says to Grant "You'd have the stregnth if you had God" then he responded "That's where youcome in Reverend" This means that Grant thinks that is the Reverends job tho talk to jefferson in the jail cell and he should not be responsible for it. Mabye when Grant is going for a long walk on pg.159 he will have time to think about it.

  12. 1.Do you think when Vivian told Grant that she was praying for Miss Emma and Irene (pg.166)that it had an Impact on grant in anyway after she told him "thats the best thing you could have said"? why or why not?

    2. Do you think the visit with Grant in jeffersons cell in chapter 21 has changed both of them in anyway from thier attitude towards one another?

    ReplyDelete
  13. hey guys
for question one I think the tree story was meaningful to grant, but i also think that the story could be a way to possibly demonstrate (or show in a different way... idk how to say it) his troubles in the book. on pg 148 "Then he came to the little pine tre-it was not a great tree... but it was pine , and it was the most beautiful aof all the christmans trees." this could possibly be describing ehat jefferson has gone through, and how hes had troubles, but can get around them if he can.

    q2
i dont think it is very ironic because it seems that there were prior dates that just could not work. i can understand why you say that though. People in yhe town are mad because "twelve white men say a black man must die, and another white man sets the date and time without consultign a black person." (pg 157) people might thnk that the trial is unfair.

  14. answer to q1 (peters questions)
I thought what vivian said had a huge impact on grant in many ways. I think he realized that the tiniest of actions can really affect someone. When grant visited jefferson at the jail, he was continuosly asking jefferson thigns like "I can pick you up some fruit-and some pecans. Ice cream? funny books? Things like that."(pg170) I think also thought that he can help out jefferson in kind of a way that vivian helped out ms. emma, because something little like that that would not affect him can change someones life

    q2
In the jail visit, i believe that grants life has been changed tremdously, but i dont think jeffersons had that much. I think his life has changed now that he has a radio and he is happy that grant did this, but im not sure if he noticed the significance. On page 172 hereacted with just nods, i feel like jefferson doesnt realize how much this means. I think this has changed grants life because he has realized the important things in life and how jeffersons life is almost over and he wants to try and make it the best he can possibly make it.

  15. So in this discussion, austin and peter both agree on question 1. Yet for question 2 they disagreed with each other.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Question 1: I dont think it made an impact on him but i think it made grant happy that vivian went and talked to ms. emma because grant wanted her too really badly.

Question 2: Yes i think it changed them in one way or another because grant felt like he was actually getting through to jefferson, and grant made jefferson smile for the first time and made him actually look forward to something. For example, "He smiled. He smiled now because he had something pleasant to look forward to, though it would be on that last day."

    ReplyDelete
  17. In this discussion Austin agreed that about what vivian said and the visit with Grant in jeffersons cell both had hude impacts. On the other hand lindsay disagreed on q1 and did not think it had an impact at all. So they both mainly agree on the certain events having impacts.

  18. q1
what do you think the significance of grant talking to jefferson is in this chapter, and how he can be a hero? WHat do you think he was trying to say when he said that he needs Jefferson more than Jefferson Needs him?
    q2
What do you think these bricklayers had to do with grant? was it a good idea for him to fight them? Even though he ended up unconscious, did he make a point for the sake of jefferson?

    ReplyDelete
  19. q1
I think Grant can be a hero by saving jeffersons life by making himself right with God and talking to him about God. Also it gives jefferson a chance to get closer to Grant everytime he is communicating with him. I think that jefferson incurages him to be in the right mind with God because his life in the jail is worse then Grants at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  20. q2
I think they ended up fighting him becaue he had finally had enough of them makeing insults against blacks or niggers and had finally stood up for himself and jefferson.on pg.199. I think it was a good idea for him to fight them because claiborne was on his side wrestling the fat one. so they were evenley matched. eventhough Grant was trying to defend his pride for black people and heritage it still was not worth it even for jeffersons sake. So Grant should not get unconsiuos over a fight that means nothing to the bricklayers and will not change them in anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Question 1: I think that Grant talking to Jefferson about the importance issue is significant because i think that Grant might be feeling that he and jefferson are similar in the fact that they both want to escape somehow and that Jefferson relates to him in a way.

Question 2: I think it was a good idea for Grant to fight the bricklayers. He was standing up for Jefferson and thats what he needs, someone to believe and stick up for him. "Just cool it, i told myself. You just cool it now." pg. 198, from this quote, you can obviously tell that Grant was frustrated and furious with the remarks being said about Jefferson.

  22. Hey guys
Question 1: In chapter 26, when
grant is leaving Vivians he says,"There was nothing outside this house that i cared for." Do you think this is significant, or shows anything about grant that we havent seen yet?
Question 2: In chapter 27, Grant is having a disscusion with Reverend. Reverend goes on and says, "You ever of anybody but yourself?" Do you think Grant is or is not selfish? Why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
  23. In the answers, it seems that both peter and lindsey believe that grant could become a hero and it it would do better for both of them. Also, that grant fought because hes just had enough of insults, and it was a good idea he fought;

    ReplyDelete
  24. Question 2: I think it can be argued either way that grant is selfish or not. I personally think he is not because of all the things he is doing to and for jefferson to try to make the end of his life the best it possibly can be. It can be argued that grant is selfish because some may say that he is doing this for for himself and not for jefferson. When Ambrose did say "You ever of anybody but yourself?" Ambrose did disagree with putting the radio in his room, and he could have possibly been upset about that.

    Question 1
For this question, i believe that Grant is upset about whats going on, and he is having trouble caring for anything else besides vivian. If grant did not have vivian, he would be having a really hard time in life. I do think "There was nothing outside this house that i cared for" is significant, because it displays grants frustration in the story

    ReplyDelete
  25. q2
I agree with austin on this one becaue some may say that is is selfish but some will say that he is not for the same reasons. But I to think that he is not because he would not be doing all these things for jefferson and getting them just for nothing. Grant personally wants to help him out by cheering him up in any that he can. So that does not sound selfish to me when he is attempting to make the end of his life as best as possible. Eventhough the people that do think he is selfish like Reverend Ambrose thats just one person.

q1 I again agree with austin on Grant having no one outside the house that he cared for and do think its significant that he is leaving Vivian. So he really does not want to leave her because he will have nothing to care about to the most. Even his own aunt taunte Loue and jeffersons aunt Emma. But he still loves them very much. Grant would really struggle in life without Vivian by his side to help him out in the tough times.

    ReplyDelete
  26. As a result, both Pete and Austin both agreed with each other that question 1 shows significance and that question 2 they see Grant being neither selfish or unselfish

    ReplyDelete
  27. Question 1: In chapter 28, when Grant is visiting jeffersons cell do you think he has inspired him in anyway or has given him hope after the talk he has about easter, beleaving in God, praying, and saying that jefferson is more of a man then he is? why or why not?

Question 2: In chapter 29, Inside jeffersons diary do you think he ever got an education by the looks in his style of writing? and do you think jefferson nervous about going to heaven? why or why not? to tell you the truth im haveing a hard time understanding it and reading it myself I dont't know about you guy's.

    ReplyDelete
  28. AT the beginning of the chapter, i feel that grant is coming in with a great attitude towards jefferson. It may seem at the beginning of the chapter that jefferson is upset, which i think he is, but when he says on the top of pag 221 " i guess if you can" that he he is happy but isnt displaying it. I think that this is helping jefferson because he really starts to talk to grant with meaning. At this point, any talking for jefferson is good for him.

for question 2 peter, i also had trouble reading because were so used to reading things with correct punctuation its hard to get used to this. i believe that jefferson probably did get an education, but the last thing he is focused on right now is punctuatuon. also, it is his diary, and if i were to keep a diary i probably would not have great spelling (not as bad as him) either. on pg 233 "i dont know if they got a heaven" this really says that i think that he is a little confused and overwelmed by all whats going on.... especially after what grant said.

  29. Peters Question 1: as a result of grant talking to jefferson, i beleive grant has showed jefferson that he really is a man.
and jefferson actually starts beleiving himslef. "men walk on two foots; hogs on four hoofs." pg. 220

Question 2: I agree i found it very difficult reading the diary. i think that if Jefferson did get an education, it wasnt a very good one because he could barley speel the words correclty and hardly had any puncutation marks. For example, "mr wigin you say you like what i got here but you say you stil cant give me a a jus a b cause you say i aint gone deep in me yet." pg. 228

  31. why do you think grant will not be at the execution? hoe do you think hes doing with all of this?

do you think that the execution process was easier for jefferson becuase of grants help along the way? why or why not? what do u think that jefferson is thinking about right now?

and Mr. A, i thought that we had to post on friday. sorry its late!

  32. In this discussion austin and lindsay both seemed to agree that Grant has inspired jefferson greatly through out the story especially towards the end. Also as a result of this he has a higher selfesteem in his man hood. They both agreed in question two that it was very difficult to understand and read.

    ReplyDelete
  33. q1 I think that he does not want to see his friend suffer and die before his eyes after all he has went through with him teaching him about God and beleave in him. it would be too much for him to handle and would be very sad. Also I think he is going through a lot of pain but he is being strong about just like jefferson. But in the end it gets to him and he starts crying.

    ReplyDelete
  34. q2 I do think it was easier on jefferson because Grant taught him to be strong and take things like a man but he was still emotional at times. Also he may have had faith in God when Grant teached him how to pray and asked him questions about the Holy day's like Eaister and Good friday. Jefferson gets teary when he is with his finally hours with his nanna Emma before he is executed in chapter 31. The children give him gifts of food to comfort him with Teacher Gratn standing in the corner. Jefferson is probably thinking am I going to heaven and he is going to die a strong man.

  35. Question 1:I dont think grant goes to the exectution because as peter said, he doesnt want to see his friend going throught that type of pain.. leading to death.

Question 2: yes, in a way grant has helped him in a huge way. he showed him that he is a man and in the end jefferson believed it. i think the process was easier for jefferson because of grant because grant actually took the time to understand jefferson, and in the end jeffereson noticed that and liked grant. in the end i think he is just thinking about heaven and if he is going or not.
